Dog training-Train your dog to voluntarily go to his dog house or dog crate when you leave for work

This dog training trick was sent to us by one of our readers, Josh.

Josh accidentally learned this dog trick by observing his dog’s behavior as he was about to leave for work.

Every day Josh guided his dog to the dog house before he took off for work. He did that every day for about 2 weeks. One day, to Josh’s surprise, the dog took the initiative to return to his dog house when Josh was about to lead him back there. This made him curious.

To see if the dog really knew how to read Josh’s mind, Josh decided to give the dog a test.

It was a Sunday. Josh dressed up and combed his hair as though he

was going to work. He acted like he was about to take his dog back to the dog house, but he noticed that the dog didn’t comply. Josh tried 3 more times but failed on all attempts.

Then next Monday came. Josh did his usual pattern—dressing up and combing his hair for work. Guess what? This time the dog recognized and slowly crawled backed to his dog house. Josh got confused for about half of his working day until he discovered that it could be the briefcase that he carried.

His actions on Sunday were identical to those on Monday except that he carried his briefcase on Monday. His speculation proved correct when Josh retested the dog the following Sunday.

Josh’s dog observed the cue that Josh was to go some place when he had a briefcase. You can create a cue or pattern for your dog to behave in such a manner too.

Use a brief case or a back-pack at the same time that you guide your dog back to his little dog house each day before you leave for work. Follow that same routine day in and day out.

Though it took Josh two weeks, your dog might learn to voluntarily go back to his dog house or dog crater  faster or slower.  Just stick with it.

This is an interesting dog training trick. Try it. You’ll be amazed at your dog’s careful observation of your repeated behavior.

With patient observation, you can sometimes learn what really goes through your dog’s mind and teach him other things too. The more you interact with your dog, the better you will become at training your dog.
