Dog Training-train your dog to stay on command

If your dog knows how to stay when commanded, he will not become a pest at the dinner table or elsewhere.

This dog stay on command training is simple. You can train him during his own meal times. As you are about to feed him with his bowl of food in hand, say to him “stay.” When he stays, lower his bowl to the ground. Retrieve the bowl immediately if he begins to eat without being released to do so.

Repeat this until he understands to stay until released before starting his meal. If you want to be creative, find a designated spot for him to eat and practice this dog trick only at that location.

You need to train your dog to stay on command no matter the time or the place, not just at mealtime.  Use a bell or a clicker to accomplish that.

A bell works effectively because it is a noise that most dogs find a little irritating or annoying. If he can be trained under this condition, he will very likely stay on command in most any other situation as well.

Get a helper—a friend or a family member. Make sure it is someone your dog recognizes and to whom he will pay attention. Have this person hide with the bell. Stay right next to your dog and hold onto his collar. Ask your helper to ring the bell. The dog will bark and chase after the sound when he hears the bell ring for the first time. This is when you command your dog to “stay.”

Once you have gotten him to stay, he may still be barking. If so, you can develop a command for that by saying “hush” or whatever you feel is better. When he quiets down for a while, release him by saying “ok.” Reward him with a dog treat and praise him after that.

Do this repeatedly until he gets used to stay when commanded.

If you can’t find a friend to help, use a stereo and its volume control. Play loud music to distract him and then command him to stay and hush. This is like a 3-in-1 dog training trick. You get to train him to stay on command, refrain from barking, and then release or resume on your command.

When he masters this dog training trick, you can incorporate the “sit” command with it. This will make him sit and stay when you command. Make sure you use the same command phrases throughout your dog training sessions.
