Train your dog to sit on command
The usefulness of this dog training cannot
be over-estimated. Teaching your dog to sit on command is protecting
him.
When you train your loving dog to sit on command, you’re also dog
training him to stop jumping up on your date when he or she visits
you as well.
Likewise, this sit on command dog training also prevent your dog
from chasing after cars outside if he knows he must sit and remain
still when commanded.
Get out your dog’s favorite treat, perhaps pieces of cheese or
whatever else. Begin to train him to sit on command by teasing him a
bit with it.
Put it up above his eyes, slightly over his head and with the other
hand point to the ground and say “sit.”
|
Position your hand above your dog’s
head to prevent his jumping up. Put it about 2 inches above his head. Don’t put
your hand and dog treat up close to his mouth. He might just steal
the treat away from you before your sit-on-command training begins.
If your dog is a pain in the butt by refusing
to sit, help him sit by putting your left hand under his tail and
behind his knees. With your right hand, put it on his chest. Firmly
tuck him into a sitting position. Don’t move your hands immediately
as your dog might just get up. Stay in that position for about 7
seconds. After that, give him a little dog treat so that he knows
sitting is rewarded.
When he sits, immediately give him a treat and tell him what a good
dog he is. Do not pet him. Petting your dog after he sits might make
him get up. Praising is any positive verbal phrase like “good dog or
good boy.” Do this sit on command dog training trick several times
until he is accustomed to it and understands that “sit” means
planting his buns on the ground.
The next step is to make him sit on command. Hold a piece of dog
treat in one hand. Slide the other hand through his collar and
command him to sit. When he sits, offer him a dog treat and praise
him. You can pull his collar firmly if he does not sit. Stay in that
position until he sits then reward him with a dog treat and praise
him.
When your dog can sit on command, you begin to reward him on a
random basis. This prevents you from spoiling your dog, not to
mention saving a fortune on treats! He knows that he might get a
treat but not all the time. This random dog treat offer works much
better than just stopping the treats altogether.
Now, you can teach him other dog training lessons like how to “shake
hands”.
