Dog Training-Train Your Dog to Overcome His Fear of Thunder, Fireworks and Other Loud Noises

When your dog hears sudden loud noises like thunder, fireworks or loud music, does he bark and howl like a wolf?  Or cower like a child anticipating a spanking?  Does he scamper around in a mad panic like your granny might if she had ants in her pants?

With a little patient dog training, you will soon be shopping for his new neon-colored “Poopi the Wonder Dog” t-shirt in celebration of his ability to firmly hold his ground in the middle of a raging battlefield! Before we jump right in to this useful dog

training lesson, we need to cover a few things. Don’t punish your dog when he acts a little crazy in response to his fear of loud noises. This makes him even more frightened and more difficult to train or retrain.

In this loud-noise control dog training, punishment and intimidation will both work against you. It is much like that old cliché “never try to teach a pig to sing, it’s a waste of your time and it annoys the pig!” Being firm yet exhibiting true care for your dog will result in love and obedience from him.

Remember that dogs are more responsive to gentle touch than to words when they are experiencing fear of loud noises. Humans are much the same, though you might not want to start hugging and touching them if they are perched on the ledge of a 20-story building at the time.

The next time your dog panics in response to loud noises, give him a hug or stroke him. Reassure him that he is safe by softly whispering into his big floppy dog ear “It’s ok Poopi, it’s just a sound, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Remember, when your dog feels intimidated, he will do most anything to overcome the fear associated with that feeling. That includes biting, chewing and tearing your new $200 shoes into little pieces of unrecognizable cowhide.
